Fanny Romero, a first-generation college student from Greeley, graduated with honors from Colorado State University with a degree in social work. She credits the Bright Futures program with providing the financial support and community connection that helped her succeed in college.
“Bright Futures represents a vital investment in every individual who applies,” Romero said. “For me, it alleviated the heavy burden of tuition and additional educational costs, providing the stability I needed for my education.”
The additional tuition assistance allowed Romero to reduce her work hours and spend more time focused on academics instead of financial stress.
“Programs like Bright Futures are more than just scholarships; they foster a deep sense of community and resilience, proving that Weld County is truly invested in my success and others,” Romero said.
Part of that sense of community was built through the required 12 hours of volunteer work each year. Romero spread her volunteer hours to many different organizations, which she said helped her build connections across Greeley.
“I engaged in a wide range of volunteer work, from assisting at a local church to working alongside pro-bono attorneys during legal workshops for the community,” Romero said. “I also completed many of my service hours with the Lighthouse (food pantry) and United Way, specifically during their Weld Project Connect events.”
Weld Project Connect is a one-day event that provides more than 70 on-site health and human care services to people in need. Romero volunteered as a navigator to assist customers get the services they needed.
She also volunteered at her sister’s school as a classroom assistant and chaperone and often helped translate for Spanish-speaking families during medical appointments.
Today, Romero is a social worker at a community college. She hopes to continue her education by pursuing a career in law, either as a paralegal or eventually earning a law degree.
